During Graphic Design II at Southwestern Michigan University, we were presented with the project to create a three page magazine spread about an artist. I chose to create my article about Mary Blair, a concept artist for Disney for films such as Cinderella, Peter Pan, and Alice in Wonderland.
Her works have a strong sense of color and unique hand-made feel, drawing on the whimsical nature of the stories she illustrates. In my spread, I wanted to draw on the whimsy of her works and use colors that compliment her works. For the cover page, I used images of elaborate gold frames to border her works like they were displayed in an art exhibit. For both parts of the spread I used canvas textured backgrounds to compliment the textures of her pieces and emphasize the hand-made nature of her work.
